Film Review


The importance of being recognized as a subject in contemporary times

Nowadays, one of the most useful and interesting ways to learn, is being aware of and to have some advices about the reality of students and the way of seeing them, in class. This new instruments are very used during these days. I am talking about movies, lyrics, trailers, to improve educational changes every day. A useful way to be aware of how the relationships between students and teachers have changed since Modernity could be by using this movie “Modern Time”. It is because in this movie we can compare the relationship between employees in factories with bosses and the relationship given in class between teachers and students during the last two centuries.
For example, one of the disadvantages showed in “Modern Time” with Charlie Chaplin as protagonist is, the way of seeing of people with power to poor one. It means, wealthy people do not see their employee as subject, indeed, they consider them as object that in every circumstances they can throw away because those workers can be replaced by machine. If we compare this situation with students, we can say that they either are not seeing like a persona. Instead of that, teachers and school consider students as simple objects who have to follow instruction and rules. They have to memorize instead of think, etc, because teachers are with the power and they are perfect, they never make mistakes, and so forth. Therefore, students have to respect their educators, they have to produce just what teachers say, they can not talk and give opinion, etc. As a consequence, students could have lower self esteem, they are not interest in study anymore, and the relationship between teacher and student is distance, cold as we saw in the film between workers and bosses.
On the other hand, we have some advantages that could be useful for us to learn how to teach and act in front of students in a better way. For example, when employees have to work, they have to be cooperative and working as a team to have good results in their jobs. In other words, they have to be in solidarity, respecting each other and being aware of their rights and duties in their job. Other example observed in the film was, when all workers were on strike (they work together by the same reason). In that sense, they could work better than being alone because all of them were acting for one reason, in that case, for new jobs opportunities because of the lack of job, food in their homes, the lack of good health, education, etc. This experience helps us to find ways to improve our school and the relationship in the class with our students that make us to work better, being cooperative, without giving too much punishment like hits and things like that, using some experiences like “The Age of Industrialization” to improve and get some ideas about how to not commit the same mistakes, errors as they did in those years. It could be a good beginning of improving our school and our process of teaching.
In conclusion, time does not mean we are changing too much in good things as fast as we want. We need to be patient but also with willingness to eliminate bad manners appreciated during those times with more power than nowadays. If we want that students were motivated to study, being educated, with good manners, respectful and so on, we must work hard on that and we have to see our students as equal as we are. I am talking about that both (teachers and students) have the same rights to participate in class; both can participate as listener and speaker. As Hernández, F. said in his book “La importancia de ser reconocido como sujeto” all human being have to be respected, heard and not discriminated by their social condition because all of us want to participle and give their opinion because we are not an object, we are subjects with different viewpoints, culture, traditions, families, etc. therefore, those aspects give us our identity and the way in which we act in front other. That is why school should be a good instrument in that case to improve and teach our students how to develop in the actual society. It also it helps us to improve our teaching and relationship with our students to have a more pleasant environment, with the will of studying, share, and so on.
Students need to “fall in love” again with education. Therefore, we have to help on that and give our mayor effort to produce more interesting and dynamic lessons, talking their life and experiences that can be used as example in class, be aware that students every time are changing. Therefore, we have to adapt their worries, ideas, etc. to be a good complement and helper to solve their doubts, worries, etc. The idea in conclusion is to find better ways to work together in a peaceful environment as the character done at the end of the film because they prefer to find different way to be happy. The only thing we need to have is disposition and daring to seek new ways and challenges.

What culture and civilization means for us.

In my opinion, the word culture means, they way in which a group of people share similar thoughts, traditions, lifestyle, beliefs, rules, territory, and so on. That is why they are able to share together and working for something in specific (Although, those people can change through the time)
In the case of civilization, for me this word means like a stage of time in which culture is influenced for civilization, it is a “new view point” in which our lifestyle change, economy, technology, and all those things. Civilization means as an improvement of thinking, in which human being, in that case people are improving or not their life with those new things that are increasing and invading our life. It is supposed that civilization would be useful and important for human but in some cases it isn’t because of the problems that it could bring.
Finally, critical thinking means, the way in which people can give their point of view about something, and also they are brave to express it in front of others. I think, it is very good way to share with others our own opinion, belief and argument about something. Where you are able to produce and talk about something that maybe could be taboo for us, etc.

Modern Times and Elizabeth "The Golden Age"

"Modern Times"

First of all, I have to say that I really like this movie. It showed us perfectly what was happening during this century with the industrialization and the effect of that. For example, we could be aware industry changed people by machine, why? Because machine was cheaper than an employee, what consequences it has? Less work for people because many of them came from the countryside to the city to get a job so, workers had less opportunity to get a job, manifestation increased too much and also puberty, the lack of food, etc. were presented in those years.
Modernity brought to people’s life many changes like: the use of new instrument, how to acquire, use it, etc. For example, people started to use bicycle, cars, train, new ways of communication like telephone, radio, etc. In that case, I think the modernity brought many good things like creation of instrument to use in every day but also, it brought difficulties to get a job, to support a family, etc.




ELIZABETH "THE GOLDEN AGE"

As we all ready know about Elizabeth’s Queen through classes and film. I have to say she was very important in British's History. She was a very strong girl who had to deal with many conflicts as we saw on the movie. For example, as she was against to the main religious on Europe, Catholicism, she had to fight with Spain to defend her empire, land, etc. That's why she felt with the obligation to defend the country because she was the face or she represented England people. As a consequence, she gave her life to England, letting all the things that it is suppose a woman have to do (get a husband, have a relationship with someone, etc. I am referring to feelings, happiness, etc), she made that England had power in Europe, creating a new religion, etc.
I believe she was very brave being a woman those years in which women weren’t important to the society. At least, she could demonstrate that women are able to participate in the society, have power, etc.
Referring to why she was called “the Virgin Queen”, it brought many consequences. First, as she was the queen of England, she had to live for her empire, letting a normal life in which she could have a husband, a baby, etc. As a consequence, she was called, “the Virgin Queen” so, she had like the responsibility to continue with her stated of single. Something that for me wasn’t so interesting, I mean, every human being have the possibility to do with their life whatever they want so, we have to accept them with their decisions.

Native and Immigrants


To be honest, I thought that United Kingdom since their first days of life was a unique identity. I did not know why but I was wrong.
During the last class, I could realize that UK is as common as us or another country in which the country has been influenced for many cultures, languages, traditions, etc. Therefore, I can say that immigrants are very important to develop a nation, society, culture, etc. because thanks of that, the identity of UK in this case was urbanized.
Something that really paid my attention was that English comes from more languages like Greek and Germany. It is so amazing an unbelievable for me.
In the other hand, we have the influence of British to other countries like Australia, Canada, and United State. In that case, we can see that every culture, country, place, whatever has influence from other place. It could be positive or negative but equally, they have an impact in each identity.
I do not have more words to say that immigrants and native works together to contribute and create something new.

Civilization and Culture class

Expectation about civilization and culture class

Hi everyone, I am going to talk about my expectation for this class “Civilization and Culture.”
As we are studying English, I think that this class is necessary because we are going to learn about cultures as our own. In the case of United Kingdom and American culture. I think that could be an interesting thing because in my case, I do not have knowledge about that.
I love United Kingdom. Therefore,I want to learn about it. I think this Kindgdom has many secrets and beautiful thing that if I learn here I am going to be impressed.
This class will help us enter a world hitherto unknown for us. It will open our mind reflecting and making many question about the influence of those culture in our culture and the other culture that there are in world.
Therefore, I am very excited to know more about the history of other countries.
